Keeping trails open is a job that never ends

“Maintenance is so hard to fund.”

A year-round walkathon brings in money every month, the steady kind upkeep needs. Our team sets it up with you once, and your hikers give on every day they walk.

“The trails we're on aren't free.”

The people already out on your trails are your supporters. They choose a monthly donation, and $1 goes to your association on every day they hit their steps.

“Our leaders are worn out.”

After launch there is nothing to run. Steps welcomes every walker, sends the monthly reports and charges each donation, so your volunteers keep their Saturdays for trail work.

Your hikers already walk. Now it counts.

Our team has spent years raising money for companies and advising charities on keeping their donors. A trail group's supporters already walk, many of them every week, so Steps turns every day they walk into a donation for the trails they love.

Example · The day they joined
Done, $25 a month
Last step: get the Steps app so your steps count. Install it once, then you can forget about it: steps.org/app

You're all set. Your steps now count for Alder Bend Trail Association. I'll send a short report at the end of each month.

Install once, then hit the trail

When hikers join, they install the Steps app once. It counts their steps on iPhone or Android, with their permission, on the trail and off, and they never need to open it again.

Three steps to your trail walk

  1. Answer four quick questions and tell us what you're raising for, from a footbridge to trail crews.
  2. We build the walk with you, with your name, your logo, your join word and your Stripe account.
  3. Share the join word in your newsletter and on the trailhead kiosk. Hikers give, install the app and walk.

Peer-to-peer fundraising from one hiking group to the next

Every hiker who joins gets their own link for their Saturday group and the friends they hike with. Each person who joins through it sets up their own monthly donation and gets a link to pass on, so the walk travels from trail to trail.

A link of their own to pass on

Right after they join, and again at the end of each monthly report, every walker gets their own link for group chats and posts. Each friend who joins through it sets up their own monthly donation. Steps never messages anyone for them.

Example · The monthly report, at the end of June
June: you walked 24 days, so $24 goes to Alder Bend Trail Association.
Your leaderboard for June, with the friends who joined through your link: 1. Dale: 27 days, 11,800 steps a day 2. You: 24 days, 9,400 steps a day 3. Rosa: 22 days, 8,600 steps a day 4. Ken: 17 days, 13,200 steps a day
You're 12th on Alder Bend Trail Association's leaderboard this month.

Two leaderboards, ranked by days walked

Each walker's own, with the friends who joined through their link, and the cause's. Both rank days a goal was hit, fair at every pace, and show average daily steps. Walkers appear only if they choose to.

Hikers giving back every day they walk

Members, volunteers and weekend hikers walk on their own time, on the trail or around town, and every day they walk is a donation to your trails. Your leaderboard keeps them walking together, all season.

Questions, answered

Do steps have to be on our trails to count?+

Every step counts, wherever it's walked. The Steps app counts a walker's steps on their phone, so a Saturday hike on your trails and a walk to work on Monday both count toward their daily goal.

How does a year-round walkathon work?+

A supporter sets up a monthly donation, like $30. For every day they hit their daily step goal, $1 goes to your cause. A missed day gives nothing, and they are charged once a month for the days they walked, up to their monthly donation. The more days they walk, the more your cause receives, up to their monthly donation.

How do supporters join?+

Every campaign gets its own join word. Supporters text it to the Steps phone number, or tap your link or scan your QR code, which opens iMessage or WhatsApp with the word already typed. Then they set their daily steps and monthly donation, and install the Steps app. One Steps number serves every campaign, so the join word is how Steps knows it's yours.

Can our cause have a leaderboard?+

Yes, two kinds: your campaign's, with everyone, and each walker's own, with the friends who joined through their link. Both rank days walked and show average daily steps, in monthly reports and on your campaign page. Walkers are on one only if they choose to join, under a name they pick.

Where does the money go?+

Straight to your own Stripe account. Steps connects to it when we set up your campaign, and every donation is paid straight to you, so Steps never holds your money. Stripe sends each donor a receipt, and tax receipts stay with you, for the amount actually given.

What does Steps cost?+

Nothing, for a nonprofit or a personal cause. When supporters give, they can add an optional tip to Steps, and those tips are how Steps is paid for. Stripe's usual card fees apply to donations, as they would on any donation page.
