“Life got busy and I forgot.”
The hello comes to you in iMessage on the days you chose, so there's nothing to remember and no app to open.
“A skipped day felt like failing.”
Here a skipped day resets nothing. There's no streak to lose, no badge to keep, and tomorrow's questions come at the same hour as always.
“It never stuck before.”
Maybe the method was the problem. Steps messages you first, at your hour, and a skipped question brings back your own line on why it matters.
I've kept journals on and off for years. The long entries never lasted, and neither did remembering to write them, so I built something that asks me first. A few words back counts.
— Tiago, father of four in Porto
Each question carries a note to self, your reason for asking it. Skip the question, and the next time it comes, your note arrives just before it. A count of skipped days stays off unless you turn it on.
Nothing asks you to fill in the missed weeks. Steps asks about yesterday and today, a minute on the day you're in, and every word from here on is dated and kept, free to read and download even if you stop.
No. On the mornings you picked, you get one short hello at the time you chose. If you write nothing, one follow-up comes in the early afternoon, and one message switches it off. There are no badges and no streaks. Tell it "keep it short" or "don't ask twice" and it remembers. A quiet week is saved as a quiet week, and the next hello arrives on your schedule.
Your call. Pick any mornings, from one a week to all seven, at the time you choose. Steps starts daily, and you can drop to fewer mornings by sending it a message if daily begins to feel like homework. If it messaged you and you wrote nothing, one follow-up comes in the early afternoon, which you can switch off. Anything you send at other times is saved with that day too.
It's a line that goes with each question, saying why the question is worth answering to you. You write it yourself, or keep the one Steps suggests. When a question goes unanswered, the next morning Steps sends your note word for word, right before that question. It never rewords your note and adds nothing of its own.
That's fine, and there's nothing to catch up on. If a morning passes with nothing written, one follow-up comes in the early afternoon, and you can switch that off. If a question goes unanswered, the next morning Steps sends your own note on why it matters, right before that question, unless you switch notes off. It can also say how many mornings in a row it's been, but that count is off unless you ask Steps to turn it on. Whatever you write later that day, even after bedtime, still goes into that day's journal.
Steps compares only the words you wrote, never what they mean. When your recent answers to one question keep repeating a word, one short line comes right before that question the next time. For example, “coffee” has come up in 4 of your recent answers to this one. Same again is fine, or something new. It never tells you what to do. It's on unless you ask Steps to turn it off.
It stays yours. The morning messages stop, and if you message Steps it tells you your entries are safe and where to pick a plan again. Every word stays readable at app.steps.org, and you can download all of it or delete all of it whenever you like. Nothing is held back to make you come back.
